Blackjack double down explained
Double the bet, take exactly one more card — glanceable boxes so “double” is a clear move, not table panic.

Answer first
90s- 01Double down means you add a second bet up to your original and receive exactly one more card.
- 02Most Vegas shoes allow double on any first two cards; some restrict to hard 9–11 — read the sign.
- 03After you double, you do not hit again on that hand — one card only.
- 04Signal is usually one finger (or chip) toward the felt with the extra chips — follow the dealer’s house style.
- 05Double after split (DAS) is a separate rule — not every table allows it.
- 06This page maps the move — it is not a full basic-strategy chart for every upcard.

What a double looks like
Start (example)
Eleven — common double spot vs many upcards
After double
Exactly one card dealt — hand is done
Soft double sample
Soft 18 — some charts double vs weak upcards
You push out matching chips (or up to the original bet, if the house allows less). The dealer gives one card — often sideways — then moves on.

If the dealer refuses the double, the table rule blocks it — do not argue mid-hand. Ask once between rounds what doubles are allowed.
Rules that change doubles
| Rule | Common Vegas pattern | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Any two cards | Often allowed | Sign or ask: “double on any two?” |
| 9–11 only | Some shoes | Hard totals only in that band |
| DAS (double after split) | Varies by table | Matters if you split then want to double |
| Soft doubles | Often allowed if “any two” | Ace+6 / Ace+7 spots on many charts |
| Less than full double | Sometimes allowed | You may put out less than the original bet |
Exact mixes differ by pit. The felt and the dealer beat a remembered blog rule.
Your turn
Words you will hear
Double / double down
Increase your bet (usually to 2×) and take exactly one additional card on that hand.
DAS
Double after split — allowed only if the table posts it. Without DAS, split hands can only hit/stand as rules allow.
Hard vs soft double
Hard totals have no Ace-as-11; soft totals do. Charts treat them as different rows.
One-card lock
After a double you cannot hit again, even if the third card leaves a weak total.
Sequence
First doubles without clutter
Step 01
Read the double line
Any two cards vs 9–11 only; note DAS if you plan to split.
Step 02
Size the extra chips first
Have the matching bet ready before you signal so the round does not stall.
Step 03
Signal clearly once
Chip forward + house gesture or a clear “double.” Wait for the single card.
Step 04
Accept the lock
Good or bad third card — the hand is over. Next decision is the next box or round.

Common misunderstandings
01Trying to hit after a double
The whole point of doubling is one card. Asking for another hit after is not allowed.
02Doubling with leftover chips only
If you cannot afford a legal double amount, hit or stand instead — do not invent a half-rule.
03Assuming every table is DAS
Split then double only when the sign allows. Otherwise play the split hands within hit/stand rules.
04Touching cards face-up
On face-up shoes you signal; you do not grab the cards. Follow the pit’s hand-signal style.

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.
01What doubling is
What does double down mean in blackjack?
You add a second wager up to your original bet and receive exactly one more card. You cannot hit again on that hand. Win or lose settles against the dealer’s final total like any other completed hand.
Can I double down on any two cards in Vegas?
Often yes, but not always. Some tables allow doubles only on hard 9–11. Read the felt or ask the dealer once when you sit so you know before a decision hand appears.
02At the table
What is the hand signal for double down?
Common pattern: place the extra chips beside your bet and use a one-finger or “double” gesture toward the felt. Houses vary — watch one hand or ask the dealer between rounds rather than inventing a signal mid-deal.
Can I double after I split?
Only if the table allows double after split (DAS). Without DAS, treat each split hand under ordinary hit/stand (and Ace-split) rules. The sign or a quick dealer answer settles it.
03Where to play
Where can I find blackjack tables in the catalog?
