Worked examples (CY2026)
Static results from the same calculator math — readable without JavaScript. Not tax advice.
Example 01
Slot win under the line
Slots · $1,999 win · $2 wager · TIN provided
W-2G unlikely. Measured $1,999 is under the $2,000 CY2026 reporting threshold. No federal withholding in this scenario. Income may still be taxable.
Example 02
Slot jackpot at the line
Slots · $2,000 win · $5 wager · TIN provided
W-2G likely. Slots measure gross winnings (wager not subtracted). Regular 24% withholding does not apply to slots.
Example 03
Slot jackpot without TIN
Slots · $10,000 win · $5 wager · TIN not provided
W-2G likely. Backup withholding may apply at 24% of about $9,995 (winnings minus wager) ≈ $2,398.80.
Example 04
Keno after the wager
Keno · $2,050 win · $100 wager · TIN provided
W-2G unlikely. Keno measures win minus wager for that game ($1,950), under $2,000.
Example 05
Sports ticket with 300× and withholding
Sports · $20,000 win · $10 wager · TIN provided
W-2G likely (measured $19,990 and 2,000× wager). Regular gambling withholding ≈ 24% of $19,990 ≈ $4,797.60.
Example 06
2026 break-even year (itemize)
Year gambling winnings $10,000 · year losses $10,000
Illustrative itemized deduction cap = min(90% × $10,000, $10,000) = $9,000. About $1,000 of winnings remains after that cap — not your tax bill.
FAQ
FAQ
How does this gambling tax calculator work?
You choose the game, enter gross winnings and the wager or buy-in, and whether you provided a TIN. The calculator applies CY2026 IRS Form W-2G reporting thresholds, the 300× test where required, regular or backup 24% withholding hints, and an optional 90% loss illustration. It does not compute your tax bracket or state tax.
Does no W-2G mean the win is tax-free?
No. Form W-2G is payer reporting. Gambling income can still be taxable when no form is issued. Report per IRS Topic 419 and your return instructions.
Why is the W-2G threshold $2,000 in 2026?
The IRS inflated the minimum Form W-2G reporting amount for calendar year 2026 to $2,000. Older “$1,200 slots / $1,500 keno” figures are outdated for 2026.
How do gambling losses work with this calculator in 2026?
Enter optional year winnings and losses. Beginning in 2026, if you itemize, deductible gambling losses are limited to the lesser of 90% of your gambling losses or your gambling winnings. You still report full winnings as income. The calculator shows that illustration — not Schedule A preparation.
Do I pay tax on a slot jackpot automatically at 24%?
Regular gambling withholding does not apply to bingo, keno, or slot machines. Backup withholding at 24% can apply if you fail to provide a TIN on a reportable win. Your final tax depends on your return, not only cage withholding.
Can I use this as a sports betting tax calculator?
Yes for federal payer rules on sports and race-book pays: reporting threshold, 300× wager test, and regular 24% withholding when proceeds exceed $5,000. It does not cover state sports-betting taxes or app-only products.
Does this calculator include state gambling tax (PA, NJ, CA…)?
No. This tool is federal-only. State rules differ by residency and game type — use a tax professional or your state revenue agency for state tax.
