Blackjack insurance vs even money

Dealer Ace upcard: insurance is a side bet; even money is a shortcut on your blackjack — glanceable before you nod yes.

Reviewed Oct 11, 2026

Answer first

90s
  1. 01Insurance is offered only when the dealer’s upcard is an Ace.
  2. 02It is a side bet that the hole card is a 10-value — typically pays 2:1.
  3. 03Even money is for your blackjack only: take 1:1 now instead of risking a push.
  4. 04You can refuse both — waving off is normal and usually smarter for beginners.
  5. 05Insurance does not protect your main hand math; it is a separate wager.
  6. 06Table signs and the dealer beat any memory of “always insure.”

On the felt

When insurance is offered

  • Dealer upcard

Ace showing — dealer asks for insurance

  • Your hand (example)

Ordinary total — insurance is optional

  • Your blackjack

Even money may be offered instead of waiting

Insurance appears before the dealer peeks or reveals. Even money is the blackjack shortcut — different decision, same Ace upcard.

Insurance vs even money

  1. 1

    Ace up

    Dealer shows Ace

  2. 2

    Insurance?

    Side bet: hole is 10-value

  3. 3

    You have BJ?

    Ace + 10-value

  4. 4

    Even money?

Take 1:1 now, skip the peek

  5. 5

    Or wait

Full 3:2 if dealer has no BJ

Insurance = separate side bet. Even money = settle your blackjack at 1:1 immediately. You can decline both and play the main hand.

Your turn

Terms at the Ace

  • Insurance

Optional side bet (often up to half your main bet) that the dealer’s hole card makes blackjack. Typical payoff 2:1 if the dealer has it.

  • Even money

When you hold blackjack vs Ace, the dealer may offer to pay your blackjack 1:1 now. You skip the chance at 3:2 and the risk of a push.

  • Dealer peek

Many Vegas shoes check the hole card for blackjack after insurance. Procedures vary — watch the dealer once.

  • Push

Your blackjack vs dealer blackjack usually returns your main bet. Even money avoids that push by paying early at 1:1.

  • Wave off

Clear “no” with a hand gesture or verbal decline. You are not required to insure or take even money.

Sequence

What happens on Ace up

  1. Step 01

    Dealer shows Ace

Action pauses. The dealer offers insurance (and may offer even money if you show blackjack).

  2. Step 02

    Decide the side bet

Place insurance chips in the insurance stripe if you want it, or clearly decline. Size limits follow the felt.

  3. Step 03

    Peek or reveal

If the dealer has blackjack, insurance pays and main bets settle. If not, insurance loses and the hand continues.

  4. Step 04

    Play your box

Without dealer blackjack, hit/stand/double/split as usual. Insurance already resolved — it does not change your totals.

Watch outs

Common mistakes

  1. 01Always insuring “to be safe”

Insurance is a separate wager with its own edge. Safety theater is not the same as a good default for beginners.

  2. 02Confusing even money with insurance

Even money settles your blackjack at 1:1. Insurance is a side bet that the dealer has blackjack. Different chips, different job.

  3. 03Insuring a weak total out of fear

A stiff hand does not magically need insurance. Play the main hand by chart; treat the Ace offer as optional.

  4. 04Arguing after the peek

Once the dealer checks and announces, the window is closed. Decide when asked — not after cards move.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Insurance basics

Is insurance required when the dealer shows an Ace?

No. Insurance is an optional side bet. You can wave it off every time. Declining is normal at Las Vegas tables and does not affect whether you can hit, stand, double, or split on your main hand afterward.

How much can I bet on insurance?

Tables usually allow up to half your original bet on the insurance line. The dealer will stop an oversized stack. If you are unsure of the maximum, ask once before you drop chips — do not add after the dealer has moved on.

02Even money

Should I take even money on blackjack?

Even money pays your blackjack 1:1 immediately instead of waiting to see if the dealer also has blackjack (which would push). Long-run math usually favors waiting for the full 3:2 when the dealer does not have blackjack. Many beginners skip even money the same way they skip insurance.

Can I take both insurance and even money?

Even money is the blackjack shortcut; insurance is the side bet for everyone. On your blackjack the dealer typically offers even money as the simple alternative to waiting — follow what that dealer offers rather than inventing a double hedge.

03After you know the Ace

Where can I practice after reading this?

Use the venues below with published NGCB twenty-one (blackjack) counts. Confirm 3:2 vs 6:5 and whether insurance is offered on the live felt — catalog pages list inventory, not tonight’s side-bet script.
