Blackjack side bets
Props beside the main circle — glanceable names, sample hands, and a reminder they are entertainment, not required.

Answer first
90s- 01Side bets are optional props — you can play blackjack without them forever.
- 02They resolve from the first cards dealt; they do not change hit/stand math.
- 03Perfect Pairs pays on your first two cards matching as a pair type.
- 0421+3 pays on a three-card poker hand using your two cards plus the dealer upcard.
- 05Posted pays and exact names vary by table — read the felt before you stack props.
- 06Winning a side bet does not mean your main hand will win — and vice versa.
Pay table
Common side-bet names
Glance before you bet
| Side bet | Typical idea | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Perfect Pairs | Your two cards pair | Mixed / colored / perfect tiers |
| 21+3 | Your two + dealer up | Three-card poker pays |
| Insurance | Dealer Ace → BJ | Separate Ace-up offer |
| Lucky Ladies | Dealer/player pair props | House-specific paytable |
| Match the dealer | Your card matches upcard | Pay tiers by suit/rank |
| Over/Under 13 | Your total vs 13 | Not on every Vegas shoe |
Pays are table-specific. If the spot is not printed on your layout, it is not offered — do not invent props from another casino’s poster.
On the felt
Perfect Pairs & 21+3 examples
Perfect pair
Same rank — check suited vs mixed pay tier
Colored pair
Same color, different suits (example tier)
21+3 flush draw-in
Your two hearts — needs dealer upcard heart for flush
Dealer upcard (21+3)
With Ah-7h → three-card flush example
Examples only. Exact pair tiers and 21+3 poker rankings are on that table’s paycard — glance before you bet the prop circle.
Your turn
How props sit on the felt
Main circle
Your blackjack bet — the hand you hit, stand, double, or split. This is the game.
Prop circle
Smaller spot for a named side bet. Must be placed before the deal, same as the main bet.
Paycard
Printed schedule of side-bet pays. If your phone memory disagrees with the paycard, the paycard wins.
Insurance stripe
Ace-up side bet zone — related idea (optional prop) but offered only on dealer Ace, not every hand.

Hit / stand as usual
A Perfect Pairs win can still be a busted main hand. Celebrate the prop if you like — still finish the blackjack decision correctly.
Sequence
Beginner path on props
Step 01
Learn the main game first
Hit, stand, double, split, and 3:2 vs 6:5 matter more than any pair spot.
Step 02
Read the paycard once
If you still want a prop, know what wins before the shoe starts — not after a near miss.
Step 03
Set a tiny prop budget
One small unit, or none. Chasing a “due” Perfect Pair is the same tilt pattern as chasing slots.
Step 04
Walk if the table is prop-heavy noise
You are allowed to sit a clean main-bet-only shoe at another open table.

Common side-bet mistakes
01Stacking props every hand
The house edge on many side bets is steep. Automatic props on every deal burn a buy-in fast.
02Thinking props fix a stiff
A hard 16 does not get easier because you also bet 21+3. Play the main hand by chart.
03Past-posting the prop spot
Side bets lock before cards out. Adding after the deal is cheating — the dealer will kill it.
04Trusting another casino’s pay poster
Pair tiers and 21+3 pays differ. Only this table’s paycard counts for your chips.

After the 90 seconds
Questions before and after you play
A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.
01Do I need side bets?
Can I play blackjack without Perfect Pairs or 21+3?
Yes. Side bets are optional entertainment. Thousands of hands are dealt every night with only the main circle filled. Skipping props is normal and usually smarter for a beginner bankroll.
Does a side-bet win mean my blackjack hand wins?
No. Props and the main hand resolve by different rules. You can collect a Perfect Pairs pay and still bust the main hand — or lose the prop and win even money against the dealer.
02Reading the paytable
What is the difference between mixed, colored, and perfect pairs?
On many Perfect Pairs schedules, mixed means same rank different colors, colored means same rank same color different suits, and perfect means same rank and suit (two identical ranks from different decks in a shoe). Exact labels and pays are on that table’s paycard — confirm before you bet.
Is insurance a side bet?
Yes in spirit: it is an optional wager offered only when the dealer shows an Ace, separate from hit/stand. It is usually printed on the insurance stripe rather than a Perfect Pairs circle. See the insurance vs even money guide for that Ace-up decision.
03Where to play
Where can I find blackjack tables after this?
Use the venues below with published NGCB twenty-one counts. Confirm which side bets are printed on the live felt — catalog pages list blackjack inventory, not every prop paytable.
