Blackjack soft 17 explained
Ace + 6 is a soft 17 — glanceable dealer H17 vs S17 so the house rule on the sign is not a mystery.

Answer first
90s- 01Soft 17 = a hand that totals 17 with an Ace counted as 11 (most often Ace + 6).
- 02H17 means the dealer hits soft 17; S17 means the dealer stands on soft 17.
- 03The rule is printed on the felt or a table sign — not the same at every Vegas pit.
- 04Soft hands can still take another card without automatic bust the way hard totals can.
- 05This page explains the vocabulary — it is not a “beat the dealer” chart.
- 06Confirm H17/S17 before you buy in; ask the dealer once if the sign is unclear.
On the felt
What soft 17 looks like
Classic soft 17
Ace as 11 + six = 17 — still “soft”
Same total, more cards
Ace + 2 + 4 = 17 soft — Ace still flexible
Hard 17 (for contrast)
No Ace-as-11 — dealer usually stands
“Soft” means an Ace is still counting as 11. If another card would force the Ace down to 1, the hand becomes hard.
H17 vs S17 on the felt
| Rule code | Dealer on soft 17 | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| H17 | Hits (takes another card) | Common on many Vegas shoes — read the sign |
| S17 | Stands (no hit) | Friendlier for players in theory — still verify |
| Hard 17 | Almost always stands | Separate from the soft-17 rule |
| Your soft 17 | Your choice to hit/stand/double* | Follow table options; not the dealer plaque |
*Doubling rules vary. The H17/S17 plaque is about the dealer’s hand — your decisions stay on your box.
Your turn
Words at the shoe
Soft hand
A hand with an Ace counted as 11. Soft 17 is the Ace+6 family (or Ace with other cards totaling 6).
Hard hand
A total without an Ace-as-11. Hard 17 is usually a stand for the dealer.
H17
House rule: dealer hits soft 17. Often printed as “Dealer hits soft 17.”
S17
House rule: dealer stands on soft 17. Printed as “Dealer stands on soft 17” when used.

Sequence
First soft-17 checklist
Step 01
Spot Ace + 6 language
If someone says “soft seventeen,” they mean a flexible 17 with an Ace as 11.
Step 02
Find H17 or S17 on the layout
Look at the dealer’s rule line before you put chips down.
Step 03
Do not mix it with insurance
Insurance is about an Ace upcard for blackjack — a different decision (see the insurance guide).
Step 04
Play only stakes you can stand
Rule differences do not replace a session stop. Size the buy-in first.
Watch outs
Common misunderstandings
01“Soft 17 always busts if they hit”
Soft hands can take a card and become a different total. Bust risk is not the same as hitting hard 17.
02Assuming every Vegas table is H17
Many are — not all. The sign on that shoe is the only reliable answer.
03Confusing your soft 17 with the dealer rule
H17/S17 governs the dealer. Your hit/stand/double choices are separate.
04Treating a blog chart as the felt
Charts online may assume S17 or H17 without saying so. Read the live plaque.

01Soft 17 meaning
What is a soft 17 in blackjack?
A soft 17 is a hand that totals 17 while an Ace is still counted as 11 — most often Ace plus 6. Because the Ace can later count as 1, the hand is “soft.” That is different from a hard 17 made of cards like 10+7 with no Ace-as-11.
What does dealer hits soft 17 mean?
It is the H17 house rule: when the dealer’s hand is a soft 17, the dealer takes another card instead of standing. The opposite plaque, S17, means the dealer stands on soft 17. Both rules appear on Las Vegas floors — read the felt for the table you join.
02At the table
How do I know if my Vegas table is H17 or S17?
Look for printed language on the layout or a small sign at the dealer’s right/left. If it is not obvious, ask once: “Does the dealer hit soft 17?” Staff expect the question. Do not rely on a tip from another property.
Is soft 17 the same as insurance?
No. Soft 17 is about how Ace+6 hands are treated — especially the dealer’s hitting rule. Insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer shows an Ace as the upcard. Separate decisions; see the insurance guide for that fork.
