Blackjack surrender explained
Give up half the bet to end a bad hand early — glanceable late vs early so the option is not a rumor.

Answer first
90s- 01Surrender lets you forfeit half your bet and end the hand without playing it out.
- 02Late surrender (common when offered): available after the dealer checks for blackjack.
- 03Early surrender (rare in Vegas): available before the dealer checks for blackjack — stronger for the player when it exists.
- 04Many Las Vegas shoes do not offer surrender at all — absence is normal, not a dealer error.
- 05Signal is usually a verbal “surrender” plus a clear gesture; watch the house style.

Late vs early surrender
| Type | When you can surrender | Vegas reality |
|---|---|---|
| Late surrender | After dealer checks Ace/10 for blackjack | The form you might see if offered |
| Early surrender | Before dealer checks for blackjack | Rare on Strip / locals shoes |
| No surrender | Option not posted | Very common — play hit/stand/double/split only |
| Result | Lose half the original bet | Other half returned; hand over |
If the sign is silent, assume no surrender until a dealer confirms otherwise between rounds.

On late surrender, a dealer blackjack usually takes your full bet before you get the option — that is why “late” is weaker than “early.”
Your turn
Words at the shoe
Surrender
Forfeit half your wager and abandon the hand. Not the same as folding mid-draw after hits.
Late surrender
Available only after the dealer has checked for blackjack (when the upcard is Ace or 10-value).
Early surrender
Available before that check. Stronger player option; uncommon in modern Vegas multi-deck pits.
No surrender table
Most decisions are hit, stand, double, split (and insurance if offered). Do not invent a half-bet exit.
Sequence
If the table offers it
Step 01
Confirm before you buy in
Ask “late surrender?” once. A shrug or “no” means play without it.
Step 02
Wait for your turn
On late surrender, decide after any dealer peek — not while insurance is still open.
Step 03
Say it clearly
Verbal “surrender” plus the house gesture. Wait for the dealer to take half and clear the box.
Step 04
Do not chase the half
The hand is over. Next decision is the next box or round — not a re-hit.

Common misunderstandings
01Assuming every Vegas table has it
Many do not. Absence is normal. Build your session plan around posted rules.
02Confusing surrender with even money
Even money is an insurance-related offer on a player blackjack vs Ace. Surrender is abandoning a non-blackjack hand for half.
03Trying to surrender after a hit
Standard surrender is on the first two cards (before drawing). Mid-hand exits are not a thing.
04Early vs late mix-up
If staff say “surrender,” ask which kind. Late is the realistic Vegas case when it exists.

Questions before and after you play
A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.
01What surrender is
What is surrender in blackjack?
Surrender lets you give up half your original bet and end the hand without hitting, standing, doubling, or splitting. The other half of the bet is returned. The option exists only if the table posts it.
What is the difference between early and late surrender?
Late surrender is available after the dealer checks for blackjack on an Ace or 10-value upcard. Early surrender is available before that check and is rarer in Las Vegas. When people casually say “surrender” on the Strip, they usually mean late — if the rule is offered at all.
02At the table
How do I signal surrender?
Most pits want a clear verbal “surrender” and a simple gesture (often drawing a line behind the bet or a similar house motion). Watch one hand or ask between rounds — do not invent a signal mid-deal.
Why doesn’t my table offer surrender?
Because many Vegas shoes omit it. That is a house rules choice, not a mistake. Play the posted options: hit, stand, double, split, and insurance when offered.
03Where to play
Where can I find blackjack tables in the catalog?
