When to split in blackjack
Turn a pair into two hands with a second bet — glanceable pairs so “split” is a clear move, not a guess from the next seat.

Answer first
90s- 01A split turns a matching pair into two separate hands with a second bet equal to the first.
- 02Classic beginner defaults: always split Aces and eights — still confirm Ace-split rules on that shoe.
- 03Tens / face cards are usually kept together; splitting them is a common trap.
- 04Re-splits and “double after split” (DAS) are table-specific — read the sign.
- 05Split Aces often get one card each and cannot be hit further — ask if unsure.
- 06This page maps the move and common pair talk — it is not a full basic-strategy chart for every upcard.
On the felt
What a split looks like
Pair of eights
Classic split — 16 as one hand is ugly
Pair of Aces
Split to chase two hands starting at 11
Tens (usually keep)
20 is already strong — splitting is rare
After you split, each hand plays on its own. A two-card 21 after a split is usually not paid as a natural blackjack — ask if it matters to your bet size.

Face-up shoes: do not touch the cards. Use the house split signal and wait for the dealer to separate the hands.
Pair talk vs what to verify
| Pair talk you will hear | Beginner default | Still check |
|---|---|---|
| Aces | Split | One card each? Re-split Aces? |
| Eights | Split | vs every upcard on your chart |
| Tens / faces | Do not split | Table talk that says otherwise |
| Fives | Do not split | Usually double/hit territory on charts |
| Fours / nines / others | Chart-dependent | Dealer upcard + DAS rules |
Defaults help you avoid panic. Exact plays still depend on the dealer upcard and the shoe’s split/DAS mix — use a chart printed for those rules.
Your turn
Words around splits
Split
Separate a pair into two hands by posting a second bet equal to the first.
Re-split
If another pair appears on a split hand, some tables let you split again up to a posted limit.
DAS
Double after split — only if the table allows. Without DAS, split hands usually hit/stand only (with Ace exceptions).
Split Aces
Often receive one card each and cannot hit further. Houses differ on re-splitting Aces — ask once.
Sequence
First splits without clutter
Step 01
Confirm split / DAS / Ace rules
One question when you sit beats an argument mid-hand.
Step 02
Have the second bet ready
Matching chips beside the original bet before you signal.
Step 03
Signal clearly once
Two-finger split gesture or a clear “split.” Let the dealer separate the cards.
Step 04
Play each hand in order
Finish the first split hand before acting on the second — dealer pace rules.

Common misunderstandings
01Splitting tens because “more blackjacks”
You usually break a strong 20. Charts almost never split tens; table bravado is not a rule.
02Expecting split 21 to pay 3:2
A natural blackjack is typically Ace+10 on the original two cards only. Post-split 21 is usually even money.
03Touching face-up cards to split
On face-up shoes you signal; the dealer moves the cards. Grabbing them causes problems.
04Assuming DAS everywhere
Double after split is optional for the house. Without it, do not force a double on a split hand.

Questions before and after you play
A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.
01What splitting is
What does it mean to split in blackjack?
When your first two cards are a pair (same rank, or sometimes two 10-value cards if the house allows), you can place a second bet equal to the first and play them as two separate hands. Each hand then hits, stands, or doubles according to table rules.
Should I always split Aces and eights?
That is the common beginner default and a good starting rule of thumb. Ace splits often get only one card each, and re-split rules vary — confirm those details on the felt. For other pairs, use a basic-strategy chart matched to the dealer upcard and the table’s DAS rules.
02At the table
How do I signal a split?
On face-up Vegas shoes, place the matching chips and use a two-finger split gesture (or a clear verbal “split”). Do not touch the cards. Watch one hand if you are unsure of the house style.
Can I split more than once?
Many tables allow re-splits up to a posted number of hands; Ace re-splits are often restricted or banned. Read the sign or ask once between rounds.
03Where to play
