Craps hard ways explained

Same number, both dice matching — glanceable pairs so “hard six” is a clear prop, not a mystery yell from the stick.

Answer first

90s
  1. 01A hard way wins only when that total hits as a matching pair (for example hard 8 = 4+4).
  2. 02Hard ways exist for 4, 6, 8, and 10 — the “hard” versions of those point numbers.
  3. 03An “easy” way to the same total (uneven dice) usually loses the hard-way bet.
  4. 04A seven before the hard pair also loses typical hard-way bets.
  5. 05Hard ways are proposition-style bets — different box and pays from Place or Pass.
  6. 06This page maps the pairs — it is not a “hard ways all day” system.

On the rail

Hard vs easy on the same total

  • Hard 8 (wins hard 8)

Matching pair — the hard way

  • Easy 8 (loses hard 8)

    Same total, uneven dice

  • Seven out

    Usually takes hard-way bets

You need the pair, not just the total. Easy ways and seven are the usual ways a hard-way chip disappears.

Dealers and stickmen call “hard six” when 3+3 shows. Knowing the call helps you track your chip without staring at every face.

Your turn

Words you will hear

  • Hard way

    A bet that 4, 6, 8, or 10 will appear as a pair (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5) before seven or an easy way.

  • Easy way

The same total with uneven dice (for example 6 as 1+5 or 2+4). Usually kills the hard-way bet.

  • Hard ways all day

Slang for leaving hard-way bets working across rolls. Still subject to seven and easy ways — not a free ride.

  • Proposition / center bets

One-roll or multi-roll center wagers including hard ways. Separate from Pass, Come, and Place.

Sequence

First hard-way chip

  1. Step 01

    Know Pass first

If come-out and point still blur, skip center props for now.

  2. Step 02

    Name one hard number

“Hard eight” — one box. Ask the minimum for that prop.

  3. Step 03

    Watch easy vs hard

Same total with uneven dice usually ends the bet. That is expected.

  4. Step 04

    Stop on your number

Win or lose, do not chase “one more hard” after a seven.

Watch outs

Common misunderstandings

  1. 01Thinking any 8 wins hard 8

Only 4+4 wins hard 8. 3+5 and 2+6 are easy eights and typically lose the hard-way chip.

  2. 02Mixing Place 6 with hard 6

Place 6 wants any six before seven. Hard 6 wants 3+3 specifically. Different boxes, different pays.

  3. 03“All day” means safe

Working across rolls still dies to seven or an easy way. Duration is not protection.

  4. 04Yelling without chips

Call the bet and put money out clearly. Stickmen hear a lot of rail noise — be specific.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01What hard ways are

What does hard ways mean in craps?

Hard ways are bets that 4, 6, 8, or 10 will roll as a matching pair (2+2, 3+3, 4+4, or 5+5) before a seven or an “easy” (uneven) way to the same total. They sit in the center proposition area, not on the Place boxes.

What is the difference between a hard way and a place bet?

A Place bet on six wins on any six before seven. A hard six wins only on 3+3. Easy sixes and sevens usually take the hard-way bet. Pays and chip locations differ — ask for the product you mean.

02At the table

Do hard ways stay up after a win?

House procedure varies: some pay and take the bet down unless you ask to press or leave it up; others have a clear “press / same bet” habit. Ask the dealer once after a hit so you know what happens to your chips.

Should beginners bet hard ways?

Optional. Learn Pass (and maybe Place) first. Hard ways are fine as a small entertainment chip once you can track pair vs easy vs seven without help.

03Where to play

Where can I find craps tables in the catalog?

Use the Las Vegas venues below with published craps inventory. Confirm hard-way minimums and center-bet procedure on the live table before you buy in.
