Dealer tipping cheat sheet

Tokens thank service — glanceable chip faces and per-game patterns before you overthink a tip.

Reviewed Oct 11, 2026

Answer first

90s
  1. 01Tips (tokes) are optional courtesy — not a percentage tax on every win.
  2. 02Common tip units are $1–$5 chips; larger tokes follow exceptional service or big moments.
  3. 03Blackjack / roulette: a chip for the dealers, or a bet for the dealers, is typical.
  4. 04Craps: tip the crew with a chip bet or a clear hand-in — follow the box’s custom.
  5. 05Poker rooms: tip the dealer when you win a pot; desk customs vary by room.
  6. 06Cocktail servers are tipped when a drink arrives — separate from the dealer toke.

On the rail

Tip-sized chips (verify print)

Glance the color — then read the denomination on the chip.

  1. White / gray, usual value $1. Small thank-you / cocktail
  2. Red, usual value $5. Common dealer toke unit
  3. Green, usual value $25. Larger tip after a big hand
  4. Black, usual value $100. Rare — high-limit moments
  5. Purple, usual value $500. Not a default tip chip

Read the denomination on the chip. Color art differs by casino — the printed value is what you are tipping.

Per-game tip patterns

Blackjack$1–$5 chip or bet for dealersAfter a nice hand or leaving

CrapsChip bet for the crewAsk box if unsure of spot
BaccaratChip when coloring upHigh-limit rooms vary
Poker roomTip from the pot you winOften ~$1 per pot; room custom
Slots / VPHand-pay attendant tipOptional after jackpot help
Cocktail$1–$5 when drink arrivesSeparate from dealer toke

Ranges are tourist norms, not rules. Tip when service helped — walking without a toke is allowed.

Progress

Clean tip vs messy tip

  1. 1

    Win / service

    Moment worth a thanks

  2. 2

    Pick a chip

    Read the $ value

  3. 3

    Hand it clear

    “For the dealers”

  4. 4

    Or bet for them

    Dealer places the tip bet

  5. 5

    Done

    No mid-deal tosses

Never throw chips onto live spots or leave a mystery stack while walking away — that creates disputes, not gratitude.

Your turn

Tipping words

  • Toke

Casino slang for a tip to dealers. Often a chip or a bet placed for the dealers on the next hand.

  • Bet for the dealers

You wager a tip chip; if it wins, dealers usually take the proceeds as the tip. Ask how this table handles it.

  • Color up, then tip

Before you leave, change small chips up, then hand a clear tip. Walking with a pocket of whites is how tokes get lost.

  • Server vs dealer

Cocktail tips go to the server who delivered. Dealer tokes go to the table crew — do not assume one chip covers both.

Sequence

Tip without awkwardness

  1. Step 01

    Wait for a pause

Between hands or after a decision resolves. Mid-deal chips look like past-posting.

  2. Step 02

    Say the destination

“For the dealers” or “for you” while handing the chip. Ambiguous drops confuse the camera.

  3. Step 03

    Match the game custom

Blackjack chip vs craps crew bet vs poker pot tip — follow what you see once, or ask one short question.

  4. Step 04

    Stop when cash is tight

A polite session with no tip beats tipping on tilt. Courtesy is optional; solvency is not.

Watch outs

Common tipping mistakes

  1. 01Treating tips as a win tax

You do not owe a fixed percent of every win. Tip for service and moments — not because a superstition demands it.

  2. 02Tossing chips mid-roll

Flying chips on a live layout create rule problems. Hand tips in during a pause.

  3. 03Assuming one size fits all

A $5 blackjack toke is not the same ritual as a poker pot tip. Watch the table once.

  4. 04Tipping with foreign chips

Use that casino’s chips or cash. Another property’s cheques are not a clean toke.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01How much

How much should I tip a blackjack dealer in Las Vegas?

There is no required amount. Many visitors tip a $1–$5 chip after a strong hand, when leaving, or as an occasional bet for the dealers. If service was ordinary and your budget is tight, leaving without a toke is allowed — tips thank help, they are not rent for the chair.

Do I tip on every winning hand?

No. Tipping every single win gets expensive fast and is not an obligation. Pick moments — a friendly stretch of dealing, a rules explanation, or when you color up to leave — rather than running a percentage meter in your head.

02By game

How does tipping work at craps?

Common pattern: place a chip bet for the dealers (the crew) or hand a chip in clearly during a pause. Ask the box once where tip bets sit on that layout. Do not toss chips into the center while the dice are in the air.

What about poker room dealers?

In many Las Vegas rooms players tip the dealer from a pot they win — often about a dollar, sometimes more on big pots. Customs differ; watch one orbit or ask the dealer quietly between hands. The desk can also explain house norms when you buy in.
