How online casino payouts work
A payout is not a spin result — it is moving cashable balance off a licensed account under published rules. New Jersey’s account chapter is the detailed public text we quote; other licensed states write their own.
Answer first
90s| Stage | What happens | Rulebook cue (NJ) |
|---|---|---|
| Win settles | Stake settles; win credits the account | Game rules readable before play |
| Cashable vs locked | Only cashable funds can leave | Restricted credits need disclosed terms |
| Withdrawal request | You ask to move cashable balance out | Account statement on demand |
| Refund-to-card first | Card deposits often refund to that card | 13:69O-1.3(f) before other exits |
| Rail clears | Cage, bank, prepaid, or approved path | Listed withdrawal means only |
| Pending held | Operator’s player-funds bank covers it | Balance ≥ cashable + on-game + pending |
Progress
From win credit to money off the account
- 1
Game settlement
Win or loss posts to the account ledger
- 2
Cashable pile
Only this pile is eligible to leave
- 3
Withdrawal ask
You request a cash-out under the terms
- 4
Rail + pending
Funds move; pending counts in the reserve
- 5
Cleared exit
Cage, bank account, or other approved rail
Settlement (game result) and payout (cash leaving the account) are different hops. Confusing them is how “instant win” marketing gets misread as “instant bank deposit.”
What can leave vs what stays
| Balance type | Can withdraw? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your own deposited cash (cashable) | Yes, under account rules | NJ bars playthrough locks on your own funds |
| Winnings that are cashable | Yes, once posted as cashable | Still subject to ID / AML checks |
| Restricted promotional credit | Not until terms clear | Playthrough / contribution rules apply |
| Gift-card deposit (NJ) | After one-time full play-through | Separate funding rule, not a promo multiplier |
| Funds on an open game | No — still in play | Counted in the player-funds reserve |
| Pending withdrawal | Already claimed for exit | Still covered by the reserve until it clears |
New Jersey text is specific; Pennsylvania, Michigan, and other licensed markets use their own chapters. Always read that state’s rules and the product’s filed terms.

Payout vocabulary from the account rules
Know before you sit
- Cash-out / withdrawal
- Moving cashable balance off the gaming account by a listed means — cage, bank transfer, prepaid card, kiosk, or other Division-approved path.
- Pending withdrawal
- A cash-out that has been requested but not yet completed. NJ requires the operator’s separate bank balance to cover pending withdrawals along with cashable balances and funds on game.
- Refund-to-source
- Before other withdrawals, remaining balance up to a credit/debit deposit amount is refunded to that card when the issuer allows (NJ 13:69O-1.3(f)).
- Player-funds bank
- A separate, FDIC-insured (or Division-approved) account whose balance must be at least cashable balances + funds on game + pending withdrawals.
- Non-transferable account
- One patron, one account per intermediary; you cannot send funds to another player’s account.
Sequence
How a regulated withdrawal typically runs
Step 01
Confirm the pile is cashable
Separate your own cash and cashable winnings from restricted promotional credit. In New Jersey, operators may not put a wagering requirement on withdrawing a patron’s own funds.
Step 02
Request the cash-out
Use the account’s withdrawal flow. Once you request a withdrawal, NJ forbids the operator from offering an incentive to reverse or cancel it — you may cancel on your own initiative, or if you fail to supply information needed to process it.
Step 03
Expect refund-to-card when that funded you
If you funded with a credit or debit card, remaining balance up to that deposit amount is refunded to that card when the issuer permits, before other exit rails.
Step 04
Exit on a listed rail
NJ lists cage cash-out (known patron), deposit-account transfer, verified prepaid card, verified personal bank account, sports-wagering kiosk (capped), dormancy removal, adjustments with notice, or other Division-approved means — not player-to-player transfers.
Step 05
Keep the statement trail
The system must give an account statement on demand with at least six months of detail (deposits, withdrawals, win/loss, balances, limit history). Pending amounts stay inside the player-funds reserve until they clear.

Common mix-ups
01“The game paid” means money is in my bank.
Game settlement credits the gaming account. A separate withdrawal request moves cashable balance onto a bank or cage rail — and that step has its own rules and timing.
02Any balance on screen can leave today.
Restricted promotional credits stay until disclosed playthrough clears. Gift-card deposits in NJ need a one-time full play-through before those funds are eligible to withdraw.
03The site can lock my deposit behind playthrough.
In New Jersey internet gaming, no — operators may not impose a wagering requirement on withdrawing a patron’s own funds. A reasonable AML check on an unwagered first deposit is different; once cleared, the withdrawal must process.
04I can tip or send funds to another player from my wallet.
NJ bars patron-to-patron transfers. Floor tipping is a land-chip/cash habit — not a remote-wallet feature.

Your funds stay yours
NJ: no wagering lock on withdrawing your own deposited funds once AML concerns are cleared.
No reverse incentive
After you request a withdrawal, the operator may not offer an incentive to cancel it.
Refund to funding card
Credit/debit deposits refund to that card first when the issuer allows.
Separate player bank
Reserve must cover cashable balances, funds on game, and pending withdrawals.
Statement on demand
Deposits, withdrawals, win/loss, balances — at least six months of detail.
Close and refund
A conspicuous close-account path; remaining balance refunded under internal controls.

01Meaning
How do online casino payouts work?
A game win first credits a licensed gaming account. A payout is the later step: you request to withdraw cashable balance by a listed rail (bank, cage, prepaid card, or other approved path). Regulators such as New Jersey write rules for refund-to-card order, player-funds reserves, and what may not lock your own cash.
What is the difference between settlement and withdrawal?
Settlement is the game result posting to your account balance. Withdrawal (cash-out) is moving cashable funds off that account. Marketing that says “instant” often means the credit posts quickly — not that a bank deposit has already cleared.
What does cashable balance mean?
Cashable balance is the portion of the account you may withdraw under the rules. Restricted promotional credits are a different pile until their disclosed playthrough or other terms clear. New Jersey also treats gift-card deposits as needing a one-time full play-through before those funds are eligible to leave.
02Rules and timing
Can an online casino refuse to let me withdraw my own deposit?
In New Jersey internet gaming, operators may not impose a wagering requirement on withdrawing a patron’s own funds. They may investigate possible money laundering if you try to withdraw an unwagered first deposit; once that check clears, the withdrawal must be processed. Other states write their own standards.
Why does a withdrawal go back to my card first?
New Jersey requires that, before other withdrawals, remaining balance up to a credit or debit card deposit be refunded to that same card when the issuer permits. That refund-to-source rule sits in the account chapter, not in game paytables.
What is a pending withdrawal?
It is a cash-out you have requested that has not finished clearing on the exit rail. New Jersey requires the operator’s separate player-funds bank balance to cover all cashable patron balances, funds still on game, and pending withdrawals combined.
03Scope
Does CasinoList rank the fastest payout casinos?
No. This page explains withdrawal and settlement mechanics from public regulator rules. It does not name operators, compare payment brands, or link to gaming sites. Land floors we catalog are separate from remote wallets.
