What are land-based casinos?

A land-based (brick-and-mortar) casino is a licensed building you can walk into — not a grey website. CasinoList catalogs those floors when a named regulator lists them.

Floor rules

Words that keep the definition honest

Know before you sit

Land-based casino
A brick-and-mortar gaming floor authorized under that jurisdiction’s commercial (or tribal) rules — a place with a street address, not a downloadable skin.
Brick-and-mortar casino
Synonym travelers use in search. Same test: licensed building, public regulator footprint, on-site games and cage.
Licensed commercial floor
State gaming statutes + that state’s board list the operator and location. Taxes, ages, and game mix differ by state.
White Gambling catalog
We publish cards only when we can tie them to official inventories (NGCB, NJ CCC/DGE, and other harvested boards). Rank places are never sold.
Grey / offshore funnel
Marketing that sells “US legal casino” with a .com and no inspectable land floor. Outside this guide and outside CasinoList.
Not legal advice
Orientation for readers comparing our catalog to search ads. Bans, employment, and interstate questions need the statute or counsel.

  1. Street address

Can you put the casino on a map and walk in? If the product is only a website, it is not this guide’s subject.

  2. Name the board

Nevada → NGCB. Atlantic City → NJ CCC / DGE. Other states → that state’s gaming board. No name → stop.

  3. Official inventory

Prefer the regulator’s published location / hotel / licence list over influencer “legal USA” roundups.

  6. Outside scope

Online iGaming skins, sweepstakes, offshore books, and markets we have not harvested stay off this page.

White Gambling = checkable licences + land floors. This board is a catalog filter, not a 50-state statute digest.

How to use this definition on a trip

  1. Step 01

Start from a land market we already list

Las Vegas / Nevada land, Atlantic City, or other Floors hubs — every CTA can open a real card with regulator links.

  2. Step 02

Confirm brick-and-mortar before you trust a “casino” ad

Search “what are land based casinos” should land on buildings. If the result is only a signup funnel, leave it.

  3. Step 03

Read the US legality guide for the licence lanes

State commercial vs tribal compact vs grey — this glossary defines the floor; that page frames who licenses it.

  4. Step 04

Walk the first visit checklist when you arrive

What to expect at a Las Vegas casino covers ID, dress, and floor manners once you are inside a real building.

Watch outs

Common land-based mistakes

  1. 01Treating “casino” as always online

In US traveler English, land-based / brick-and-mortar still means a physical licensed floor. Online products are a different stack.

  2. 02Assuming one state defines every land casino

Nevada’s resort model is one commercial system. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, and others write their own rules and inventories.

  3. 03Equating a tribal casino with a state commercial licence

Tribal floors sit in a federal / tribal compact lane (NIGC oversight). Keep that separate from NGCB or NJ CCC rows.

  4. 04Using Grey “legal USA” ads as proof of a land licence

A landing page without a street floor and regulator inventory is marketing — not a brick-and-mortar casino card.

01Definition

What are land based casinos?

Land-based casinos are licensed brick-and-mortar gaming floors — buildings with a street address where a public gaming authority lists the operator and location. In CasinoList’s White Gambling sense they are the walk-in pits, slots, cages, and race/sports desks we catalog, not websites sold as “US legal casinos.”

What is a brick and mortar casino?

“Brick and mortar casino” is the same idea as land-based: a physical licensed casino you can visit. Check for a named regulator (for example NGCB in Nevada or NJ CCC / DGE in Atlantic City) and an official inventory entry before you treat an ad as a real floor.

Are land-based and brick-and-mortar the same thing?

Yes in ordinary traveler language. Both contrast a physical licensed casino with online-only products. We use both phrases so searchers find the same White Gambling definition.

Is every building with slot machines a land-based casino?

Not in our product language. We mean commercial (or separately tribal) licensed casino floors tied to a regulator list. Restricted taverns, truck-stop VGTs, and other limited licences may appear in some state files under different classes — read the card and the licence type.

02White Gambling vs grey online

How is a land-based casino different from an online casino ad?

A land-based casino has an inspectable street address and sits on a public licence / location list. Many “.com casino” ads point to offshore, sweepstakes, or unlicensed products with no land floor in our catalog. We do not recommend those funnels.

Does CasinoList list online casinos?

No. CasinoList / White Gambling publishes licensed land venues we can harvest from official inventories. Online iGaming skins and apps stay outside this glossary and outside the catalog.

Why do you refuse grey or offshore casino sites?

Our mission is checkable White Gambling: named regulators, published inventories, and land floors. Grey funnels fail that test, and we do not publish how-tos for sweepstakes or offshore play.

03Licensing context

Who licenses land-based casinos in the US?

Commercial land casinos are licensed by each state’s gaming board — for example the Nevada Gaming Control Board, New Jersey’s Casino Control Commission with the Division of Gaming Enforcement, or other state boards we cite on market pages. Tribal casinos use a separate federal / tribal compact lane with NIGC oversight. There is no single nationwide commercial casino licence.

Is this page legal advice?

No. It is a glossary for travelers reading our catalog. It explains what we mean by land-based / brick-and-mortar casinos and how that differs from grey online ads. Edge cases need the statute, the regulator, or qualified counsel.
