Poker rake explained

The room’s fee from the pot — glanceable chip flow so “rake” is not a mystery word on a listing.

Answer first

90s
  1. 01Rake is the poker room’s fee, usually taken from cash-game pots (not a tip to the dealer).
  2. 02Typical pattern: a percentage of the pot up to a posted cap — exact numbers are house-specific.
  3. 03No flop / no rake rules exist in some rooms — ask the desk for the table you join.
  4. 04Tournament fees are usually a separate entry fee / prize-pool structure, not the same as cash rake.
  5. 05Our catalog may note room presence and fields we publish — live rake sheets change; confirm at the desk.
  6. 06Tipping the dealer after a pot is optional courtesy and separate from rake.

If someone calls a tip “rake,” they are mixing words. Ask “what does this table take from the pot?” for the real answer.

Rake vocabulary

  • Percentage + cap

Common structure: take up to X% of the pot until a dollar cap is reached. Caps often scale with stakes.

  • No flop, no drop

Some rooms take no rake if the hand ends before a flop. Not universal — confirm for your game.

  • Drop

Physical or electronic take of the house fee from the pot. You will see chips or a button press — do not touch the drop.

  • Jackpot drop

Separate small contribution some rooms take for a bad-beat or promotional pool. Read the posted notice.

  • Listing silence

If our page does not publish a live rake %, we are not guessing. Desk sheet beats any blog memory.

On the felt

Cash pot vs tournament

  • Cash hand (example)

Rake comes from this pot under house rules

  • Tournament chip

Entry fee / structure differs — not the same rake sheet

Winning a cash pot and winning tournament chips are different economies. Ask which structure you are buying into at the desk.

Before you sit

  1. Tip 01

    Ask the desk

“What’s the rake on this $1/$2?” Get the cap and any no-flop rule in one clear answer.

  2. Tip 02

    Watch one pot

See the drop happen. If something looks different from what you were told, ask again before you buy in deep.

  3. Tip 03

    Separate tip from rake

Rake already went to the house. Tip only if you choose — not because you think the drop was a tip.

Common mistakes

  1. 01Calling rake a dealer tip

Rake funds the room. Tips are optional and personal. Mixing them confuses new players and staff.

  2. 02Trusting an old screenshot

Rake sheets change. A 2022 Reddit photo is not today’s desk policy.

  3. 03Ignoring jackpot drops

A small extra drop can be posted for promotions. Know if it applies to your table.

  4. 04Expecting our catalog to freeze live %

We publish verifiable room facts. Live fee schedules belong to the room — we link you there, we do not invent percentages.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01What rake is

Is rake the same as tipping the dealer?

No. Rake is the poker room’s fee from the game, taken according to posted procedure. A tip (toke) is optional money you give the dealer. You can tip zero and still have paid rake on raked pots.

Do tournaments use the same rake?

Usually not. Tournament buy-ins split into prize pool and fees under a posted structure. Cash-game rake is a per-pot (or time) fee while you play ring games. Ask which product you are joining.

02At the table

Can I ask the dealer to explain the rake mid-hand?

Short clarification between hands is fine. Stopping a live pot for a debate is not. Get the sheet at the desk or between deals so the game keeps moving.

Why doesn’t CasinoList list every rake percentage?

We only publish facts we can verify and keep current. Live rake schedules change by stake and promotion. Empty fields mean “confirm at the room,” not “free poker.”

03Where to play

Where can I find poker rooms after reading this?

Use the Las Vegas poker-room venues below from our catalog. Open a room page, then confirm today’s rake sheet and stakes at the desk before you buy chips.
