Craps place bets explained

Chip on a number box — that number before seven. Glanceable dice so Place is not confused with Come or free odds.

Answer first

90s
  1. 01A Place bet sits on a number box (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) and wins if that number rolls before seven.
  2. 02Place is usually active right away — not a Pass-style come-out that can win on 7/11 first.
  3. 03Pays are set by the house place schedule (not the same as true odds behind Pass/Come).
  4. 04Dealers often move or “off” Place bets on come-out rolls — ask how this table handles it.
  5. 05Come is a different bet: Pass-style timing that can land on a number after its own come-out.
  6. 06This page maps Place vs nearby bets — it is not a “best number” or guaranteed system.

On the rail

What Place is waiting for

  • Place 6 (example)

Six before seven — Place 6 wins

  • Seven out

Seven first — Place bets usually lose

You are rooting for the boxed number. A seven before that number typically takes the Place chips.

You can have several Place numbers at once. More boxes means more ways to get hit — and more ways to lose to seven.

Your turn

Words at the rail

  • Place bet

A wager that a chosen point number (4–6 / 8–10) will roll before seven. Paid at the table’s place schedule.

  • Place 6 / Place 8

Common Place numbers. Dealers often want bets in amounts that fit the pay table cleanly — they will tell you the unit.

  • Off / on come-out

Many tables turn Place bets “off” on come-out rolls so a seven does not sweep them while Pass is resolving. Confirm local habit.

  • Buy bet

Related number bet with a different commission/pay structure. Not identical to Place — say the word you mean.

Sequence

First Place bet without clutter

  1. Step 01

    Learn Pass first

If the come-out and point still confuse you, skip Place for a session.

  2. Step 02

    Ask the unit

“What’s the minimum on Place 6?” Dealers will set chips that pay cleanly.

  3. Step 03

    Name one number

“Place the six” — one box. Do not carpet every number on day one.

  4. Step 04

    Watch on/off on come-out

Know whether your Place is working when the puck goes OFF for a new come-out.

Watch outs

Common misunderstandings

  1. 01Calling Place the same as Come

Come has a Pass-style first roll (7/11 win, 2/3/12 lose). Place does not work that way.

  2. 02Expecting true-odds pays on Place

True odds sit behind Pass/Come. Place uses the house place pay table.

  3. 03Leaving Place working when you meant Off

Come-out sevens can sweep working Place bets. Learn this table’s on/off custom.

  4. 04Buying every number at once

More boxes raise seven exposure. Start with one number you can track.

After the 90 seconds

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01What Place is

What is a place bet in craps?

A Place bet wagers that a specific point number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10) will roll before a seven. Chips sit on that number’s Place area. Wins pay at the table’s place odds schedule, which is different from true odds behind the Pass or Come line.

What is the difference between a place bet and a come bet?

Come is a Pass-style bet: its next roll can win on 7/11 or lose on 2/3/12, then may move to a Come point. Place puts money directly on a number box to hit before seven, without that Pass-style first roll. Both can end on a seven — the path and pays differ.

02At the table

Are place bets working on the come-out roll?

Often they are “off” by default on come-out so a seven does not take them while Pass resolves — but houses vary. Ask “are Place bets working?” once when the puck turns OFF.

How much should I bet on Place 6 or 8?

Dealers usually want amounts that fit the pay table (common units differ by table). Ask for the minimum and let them set the chips — fighting the unit mid-roll slows the game.

03Where to play

Where can I find craps tables in the catalog?

Use the Las Vegas venues below with published craps inventory. Confirm Place minimums and on/off come-out habits at the live table before you buy in.
