Poker room vs casino pit
Same cards, different worlds: who you play, how you pay the house, and how you sit down — glanceable for a Vegas floor.
Reviewed Oct 11, 2026
Answer first
90s- 01Poker room: you play other players; the house takes a rake or fee from the pot.
- 02Pit: you play the house (dealer hand or pay table) — blackjack, UTH, Three Card, baccarat, and more.
- 03Same hand ranks can appear in both; the betting structure is not the same game.
- 04Rooms use a desk/list and table buy-in; pits use a table minimum and color chips.
- 05Look for a separate poker sign / desk for the room; pit games sit on the main casino floor.
- 06Pick by opponent and pace — not by the word “poker” on a felt alone.
Two worlds
Two floors, two opponents
Room
Poker room
Player vs player
- Opponents: the other seats at your table
- House cut: rake or time fee from the pot
- Entry: poker desk / list → called to a seat
- Chips: table stack from the room cage or desk
- Pace: streets, pots, longer hands
Pit
Casino pit
Player vs house
- Opponent: the dealer / pay table
- House cut: built into odds and commissions
- Entry: open seat at a marked minimum
- Chips: color chips bought at that table
- Pace: dealt rounds, clear win/lose/push
Hole cards look similar. The question is who takes the other side of your bet — players or the house.

“Poker” on a pit felt (Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Three Card Poker) still means vs the house — not a cash-game room.
On the felt
Same ranks, different bets
Room — Hold’em pot
Hole private · board shared · pot from players
Pit — UTH vs dealer
Ante / Blind / Play · you vs dealer hand only
Hand rankings can match. In the room the pot is other players’ money; in the pit you settle against the house line.

Buy-in matches that world
If the felt says Ante and Play, you are in the pit even when the title includes Hold’em.
Your turn
When each world fits
Choose the room
You want player-vs-player Hold’em, longer sessions, and reading opponents — with a posted buy-in and list wait.
Choose the pit
You want a short round vs the house, clear pay tables, and an open seat without a poker desk call.
Do not mix buy-ins
Room stacks and pit color chips are not interchangeable. Cash out before you change worlds.
Read the title
Ultimate Texas Hold’em and Three Card Poker are pit games. Cash Hold’em lives behind the poker desk.
Match your clock
Rooms can mean a wait and multi-street pots. Pit seats turn over faster when you want a short stop.

Common mix-ups
01“It’s poker, same thing”
Shared ranks do not make UTH a cash game. Different opponent, different money model.
02Sitting without the list
In a busy room you usually need the desk. Jumping into a seat without a call can get you sent back.
03Carrying pit color into the room
Table color chips stay at that pit game. Cash out before you walk to the poker desk.
04Expecting rake on a pit hand
Pit games price the house into the odds or commission — there is no pot rake like a cash game.
05Ignoring the pay table
Pit “poker” titles live or die by Ante bonuses and Play rules. Glance the felt before you buy in.

Etiquette when you switch
Know before you sit
- Ask which door
- “Where is the poker desk?” beats circling the pit looking for a cash game that is not there.
- Act in turn in the room
- Cash games punish acting out of turn. Pit games still want hands off when the dealer says no more bets.
- Tip the right person
- Room dealers and pit dealers both tip out differently by house — tip for service you received, not for a “system.”
- Do not coach strangers
- Explaining room strategy at a pit UTH table (or the reverse) slows everyone. Keep advice for your own stack.

Tip 01
Name the two doors
On arrival, note the poker desk sign and the open pit tables. Decide opponent first: players or house.
Tip 02
Match one guide
Room → Hold’em basics. Pit poker titles → UTH or Three Card guides. Do not study the wrong betting line.
Tip 03
Size one session
Pick a loss limit for that world only. Switching mid-tilt usually means switching money models too — stop first.

Questions before and after you play
A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.
01Spotting the difference
How do I tell a poker room from the pit in ten seconds?
Look for a dedicated poker desk, list board, or room entrance away from the main table-game aisles. Pit games sit on the open casino floor with felt titles, posted minimums, and a dealer who is the house side. If you see Ante / Play / Pair Plus boxes, you are in the pit even if the title says Hold’em or Poker.
Is Ultimate Texas Hold’em a poker room game?
No. UTH is a pit table game against the dealer with Ante, Blind, and timed Play raises. It uses Hold’em-style hand ranks, but you are not playing a cash-game pot against other tourists. For player-vs-player Hold’em, go to the poker room desk.
Does Three Card Poker count as the poker room?
No. Three Card Poker is a pit game versus the dealer and optional side bets. Hand rankings differ from five-card Hold’em. Use our Three Card Poker guide for that felt; use the poker room for cash or tournament Hold’em.
02Money and buy-ins
Why does the room take a rake if the pit already has an edge?
Different products. In the room the house usually does not play a hand — it takes a small cut (rake) or time fee from player pots. In the pit the house is your opponent and prices its edge into pays, commissions, or both. Knowing which cut you are paying stops “why did they take chips?” confusion mid-session.
Can I use the same chips in both places?
Not safely. Pit color chips belong to that table game until you cash them with the dealer. Poker rooms want cash or casino chips acceptable at the desk. Always color up or cash out before you change worlds so you are not arguing with a chip that the next cage will not take.
Which buy-in is usually larger?
It depends on stakes, but cash-game rooms often ask for a multi-big-blind stack that can look large next to a low pit minimum. Compare the posted room buy-in to the pit minimum on the sign — then pick the session you can afford without chasing. Our catalog does not publish live stake boards; confirm on site.
03On the floor
The resort has poker tables on the floor — is that the room?
Sometimes a room opens onto the floor, but a true poker room still runs through the desk/list and player-vs-player rules. If the table has a house Ante/Play layout, it is pit inventory. When unsure, ask staff “cash game or table game?” — one sentence prevents the wrong buy-in.
Where should I go after reading this?
Use the poker rooms listed below — open or series-host rooms from our Las Vegas catalog, sorted by published table counts. Open a casino page for status and links, then confirm the desk for Hold’em. For pit “poker” titles, open the matching rules guide (UTH, Three Card) and sit only after you read that felt.
I only know blackjack. Should I start in the pit or the room?
Start in the pit if you want vs-house games you already understand, then visit a poker room when you want player-vs-player Hold’em with a clear buy-in and list. Do not treat a pit Hold’em-branded game as practice for a cash room — the money model and etiquette differ.
