How to read a slot paytable
The help screen is the rulebook — glanceable symbol pays and line rules for a phone on the slots floor.

Answer first
90s- 01Open the paytable / help / info button before the first spin — every game posts its own pays.
- 02Symbol charts show what matching icons pay at your current bet (or per line).
- 03Paylines vs ways-to-win change which patterns count — the screen labels which system you are on.
- 04Feature / bonus rules are written there too — including how they trigger.
- 05Changing bet size can change credit pays — re-check after you bump the bet.
- 06No paytable means you are guessing; walk to a machine whose help screen you can read.
On the machine
Symbols are the alphabet
High symbols (example)
Often the richer line pays on the chart
Mid / BAR strip
Mixed rows — check which mixes pay
Low fruit mix
Smaller pays or none — chart decides
Art differs by title. Treat the paytable icons as the authority — not a memory of a different cabinet two seats over.

Thirty seconds in the help screen beats twenty minutes of confused spins. Cashiers and attendants are not your paytable.
Your turn
Paytable sections
Symbol pay chart
Lists credits or cash for 3-of-a-kind, 4-of-a-kind, etc. Often scales with bet.
Paylines
Fixed paths across reels that must light up for a line win. Some games let you choose line count.
Ways / clusters
Alternate scoring — adjacent symbols or grids instead of classic lines. The help labels which system applies.
Scatter / wild
Special symbols with their own rules (pay anywhere, substitute, trigger features). Read their page in help.
Feature rules
Bonus rounds, pick features, meters — how they start and what they can pay. Skip the feature page at your own confusion.
Quick checks
| Question | Where to look |
|---|---|
| What does three BARs pay? | Symbol chart at current bet |
| Do I need all lines on? | Lines / bet panel |
| How does the bonus feature start? | Feature / bonus help page |
| Is this a progressive? | Jackpot / progressive page on glass |
| Did my bet change the pays? | Re-open paytable after bet change |
If the help screen is broken or unreadable, pick another machine. Guessing is how people invent house rules.
Sequence
First session habit
Step 01
Sit and open help
Before cash hits the bill acceptor if you can — or immediately after credits appear.
Step 02
Skim symbols + lines
Know the top pays and whether you are on lines or ways.
Step 03
Note the bonus trigger
One sentence: “three scatters start the bonus feature” — enough to recognize it live.
Step 04
Spin only after that
If the chart is opaque, stand up. Another cabinet will make more sense.
Watch outs
Common mistakes
01Skipping help to “feel it out”
Feeling it out is how people miss qualifying bets and feature rules. The chart is faster.
02Assuming every BAR game pays the same
Titles reuse art. Pays are per paytable — not per nostalgia.
03Ignoring bet-scaled columns
A screenshot from minimum bet is wrong after you max the slider.
04Confusing paytable with RTP folklore
Paytables show awards for combinations. They are not a promise of hourly return. We do not invent RTP per cabinet without an official source.

After the 90 seconds
Questions before and after you play
A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.
01Finding the chart
Where is the paytable on a modern machine?
Usually an i / Help / Pays button on the touchscreen or a button deck control. Cycle through pages until you see symbol awards, lines/ways, and features. If nothing opens, ask an attendant once — or choose another cabinet.
Do I need to understand every bonus page?
At minimum know how the main bonus starts and whether your bet qualifies. Deep feature math can wait. Confusion is a reason to pick a simpler game, not to mash Spin harder.
02Pays and bets
Why did the pay numbers change when I raised my bet?
Many games scale credit awards with wager. The paytable is often showing values for the bet currently selected. After changing bet size, reopen the chart before you assume the old numbers still apply.
Is the paytable the same as “RTP”?
No. The paytable lists awards for symbol combinations and features. RTP (return percentage) is a long-run statistic and is often not posted per machine in a way we can verify — we do not invent it.
03Where to play
Where can I find slot floors after learning paytables?
Use the Las Vegas venues below with published slot inventory. On property, pick a cabinet whose help screen you can actually read at a glance.
