How online sports betting works

In a live sports state you prove who you are, prove you are in that state, then a licensed book accepts a ticket. Unlicensed apps skip that stack — they are not this guide.

In short

Key takeaways

  • Online sports betting works only in states that license it, while you are physically there.
  • The app checks your identity, age and location before it takes a bet.
  • A minus price is what you stake to win $100: at −110 you risk $110 to win $100.
  • Winnings land in your account wallet and can be withdrawn to your bank.

Ticket words

  • Moneyline / spread / parlay

Bet types. See Moneyline vs spread vs parlay for land/ticket language.

  • Geofence

The book must refuse a ticket from outside the licensed state.

  • on-property

Some sports statuses are property-only — this stack is not a statewide app there.

Sequence

What the licence is actually checking

  1. Step 01

Are you in a live state?

Read Is online sports betting legal in the US? On-property is not this flow.

  2. Step 02

Is the book on that roster?

Verify from the board, not the homepage.

  3. Step 03

    Did location services pass?

If the geofence fails, the licence is doing its job.

Age pip only when the sports row is not 21. ◆ = tribal-compact exclusive, not a multi-book market.

Green is statewide online. On-site means you must stand inside a licensed casino or tribal venue. Checked October 13, 2026.

01Mechanics

How does online sports betting work?

In a live sports state, a licensed operator verifies identity and age, confirms you are physically in that state, accepts a ticket, and settles to a wallet. That stack is a licence condition. It does not exist in not legal states, and on-property statuses are not statewide apps.

02Advice

Is this page legal advice?

No. It describes the licensed stack using the sports state table and board rosters. For a personal account, use that board’s complaint path or ask counsel.

03More questions people ask

Which states have legal online sports betting?

As of our October 13, 2026 check, online sports betting is live in 32 jurisdictions: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming. Every other state either has no law, has a law that has not launched yet, or limits play to a physical venue. Check the state regulator before you deposit, because launches and repeals happen mid-year.

How old do you have to be for online sports betting?

It depends on the state, not on the app. Of the 32 states where online sports betting is live in our October 13, 2026 check, 27 set 21 as the minimum age and 2 allow 18 or 19 (New Hampshire, Wyoming). The operator must verify age and identity before the first real-money wager, so a younger player is refused at sign-up, not at cash-out.

What do American odds like -110 and +150 mean?

A minus number is how much you stake to win $100: at -110 you risk $110 to win $100. A plus number is what a $100 stake wins: at +150 a $100 bet returns $250 including the stake.

Why does the app ask for my location?

The Wire Act and state law require the bet to be placed inside the licensing state. Apps use GPS, Wi-Fi and IP checks, and block wagers when you cross the border.
