In short

Key takeaways

  • Count only clean outs: cards that give you the best hand, not a hand someone else beats.
  • On the flop, outs × 4 approximates your chance by the river. On the turn, use outs × 2.
  • Compare your chance with pot odds. If you need to call $20 into a $60 pot, you need 25% to break even.
  • Implied odds count what you can win later. Draws that are hidden pay off better.

13 hearts in the deck minus the 4 you can see leaves 9 outs. Nine times four is 36%; the exact figure by the river is 35.0%.

Call or fold: the four-step check

  1. Tip 01

    Count outs

List the cards that make your hand. Remove ones that also help an opponent.

  2. Tip 02

    Turn outs into a percentage

Use ×4 on the flop if you will see both cards, ×2 for one card.

  3. Tip 03

    Work out pot odds

Divide the call by the pot after your call. $20 to win $60 + $20 → 25%.

  4. Tip 04

    Compare

Call if your chance is higher than the pot odds, or close with good implied odds.

Why the rule of 4 overstates big draws

The ×4 shortcut works well up to about 8 outs. With 15 outs it gives 60%, but the true figure is 54%.

A common fix is to multiply by 4 and subtract the outs above 8. With 15 outs that gives 60 − 7 = 53%, close to the true number.

On the turn, ×2 plus 2 is a bit more accurate for small draws: 9 outs × 2 + 2 = 20%, near the true 19.6%.

Know before you sit

Clean out
A card that makes you the winner with no doubt.
Dirty out
A card that improves you but may also give an opponent a better hand.
Pot odds
The ratio of the call to the total pot after calling.
Implied odds
Extra money you expect to win on later streets if you hit.
Backdoor draw
A draw needing both turn and river, worth about 1 to 1.5 outs.

Turning pot odds into a ratio

Players often say odds as ratios. A flush draw on the turn is about 4 to 1 against: you miss four times for each hit.

If the pot offers more than 4 to 1, such as $50 to call into $250, the call is profitable on the numbers alone.

On the flop, compare with the bet you face now, not the total for both streets, unless you are all-in.

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Outs

How many outs does a flush draw have?

Nine. There are 13 cards of each suit, and you can see 4 of them in your hand and on the board. With two cards to come you hit about 35% of the time; with one card to come about 19.6%.

What is the rule of 4 and 2 in poker?

A shortcut for draw odds. On the flop, multiply your outs by 4 to estimate your chance of hitting by the river. On the turn, multiply by 2 for the river alone.

How many outs is an open-ended straight draw?

Eight: four cards at each end. For example, 7-8-9-10 is completed by any 6 or any jack. You hit about 31.5% by the river from the flop.

What are pot odds?

Pot odds compare the cost of a call with the pot you can win. Calling $10 into a $30 pot means paying $10 to win $40 in total, so you need to win at least 25% of the time.

Should I always call with a flush draw?

No. Call when the pot odds, plus what you expect to win later, justify it. Facing a pot-sized bet you need 33%, and a flush draw with one card to come has only about 19.6%.

What is a gutshot?

An inside straight draw where only one rank completes it, such as 5-6-8-9 needing a 7. It has 4 outs, about 16.5% by the river from the flop.

02Odds

What is the chance of making a flush from the flop?

About 35% with two cards to come if you hold four to a flush. That is roughly 1.86 to 1 against. Played all-in on the flop, a flush draw is a slight underdog against one pair.

03More questions

How do implied odds change a call?

Implied odds include money you expect to win on later streets if you hit. A small call with a hidden draw can be right even when pot odds alone say fold, especially against players who pay off.

What is a backdoor flush draw?

Three cards of a suit after the flop, needing both turn and river to match. It hits about 4.2% of the time, worth about one and a half outs.
