Do you have to pay taxes on sports betting?

Federal tax law treats gambling winnings as income. A missing form is not a free pass. This page restates IRS W-2G instructions — not a sportsbook’s FAQ.

In short

Key takeaways

  • All gambling winnings are taxable income, with or without a tax form.
  • For 2026 a W-2G is issued when winnings reach $2,000 and at least 300 times the bet.
  • Starting in 2026 you can deduct only 90% of losses, and only if you itemize.
  • Keep your own record of wins and losses.

Federal paper, plainly

Know before you sit

Gambling income
The IRS treats gambling winnings as taxable. Sports-wagering payouts sit in that family unless a specific exclusion applies.
Form W-2G
An information return certain payers file when a reporting threshold is met. CY2026 minimum on the instructions is $2,000 for the listed W-2G cases.
No slip
Absence of W-2G does not mean the win is off the return. Keep your own records.

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Federal income

Do sports betting apps send tax forms?

Sometimes, when a payer’s reporting line is met — not on every ticket. We do not inventory each operator’s back office. Read Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (January 2026 revision for CY2026) and keep your own records even when no form arrives.

02Advice

If I got no form, is the win tax-free?

No. The IRS has long said gambling income can be taxable without a W-2G. Treat “no email from the app” as a record-keeping problem, not an exemption. Confirm current publications on IRS.gov or ask a tax professional.

Is this page tax advice?

No. It points at IRS W-2G instructions already used on our Nevada thresholds guide. State withholding, estimated tax, and loss deductions need a tax professional or the IRS. Counsel notice appears on the page automatically.

03More questions people ask

Do I pay tax on sports betting winnings?

Yes. Federal law treats all gambling winnings as taxable income, whether or not the sportsbook sends a Form W-2G. You report the total on Schedule 1, line 8b. State income tax usually applies too.

When does a sportsbook send a W-2G?

For 2026 the IRS line is winnings of at least $2,000 and at least 300 times the wager. A big parlay at long odds usually crosses it; a straight bet at -110 almost never does. The free W-2G checker on this site tests one payout.

Can I deduct my losing bets?

Only if you itemize deductions. From tax year 2026 the deduction is limited to 90% of losses and never more than your winnings. Keep the account history the app provides as proof.

Which states do not tax gambling winnings?

States without a personal income tax, such as Nevada, Texas, Florida, Washington, Wyoming, South Dakota, Tennessee, New Hampshire and Alaska, do not tax winnings as income. Other states do, and a non-resident win can be taxed where it happened.
