What does on-property sports betting mean?

In our state table, on-property means sports wagering is tied to a licensed or tribal facility. It is not a geofenced app for every ZIP code in that state.

In short

Key takeaways

  • On-property means you can bet only inside a licensed casino, racetrack or tribal venue.
  • Some venues let you use a phone app on their Wi-Fi while on site.
  • Tribal compacts or the state constitution often limit betting to specific lands.
  • It is not the same as statewide mobile betting.

Live vs on-property vs not legal

  1. 1

    live

Statewide (or DC) remote/mobile sports where the status says so

  2. 2

    on-property

Only on the licensed / tribal facility

  3. 3

    retail only

NE · NM — counter, not a statewide internet book

  4. 4

    not legal

    No licensed sports product

Affiliate copy that says “legal in Washington” without “on property” is flattening the status.

Sequence

If an ad says your state is legal

  1. Step 01

    Open the sports betting status

live, on-property, retail only, or not legal.

  2. Step 02

    If on-property, ask “which facility?”

The board’s property list — not an App Store screenshot.

  3. Step 03

Do not use the 32-live count

That count excludes these six on purpose.

01Meaning

What does on-property sports betting mean?

In White Gambling’s sports state table it means wagering is authorized at a licensed or tribal facility, not as a statewide mobile sportsbook. Six jurisdictions are stored that way: Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin (checked Oct 13, 2026).

02Advice

Is this page legal advice?

No. It explains one status label from state-status.json. For a wager on a specific property, read that compact or board page, or ask counsel.

03More questions people ask

What does on-property sports betting mean?

You can bet only while physically inside a licensed casino, racetrack or tribal venue, sometimes on a phone using that venue Wi-Fi. Leave the property and the app stops taking bets.

Which states have legal online sports betting?

As of our October 13, 2026 check, online sports betting is live in 32 jurisdictions: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming. Every other state either has no law, has a law that has not launched yet, or limits play to a physical venue. Check the state regulator before you deposit, because launches and repeals happen mid-year.

How old do you have to be for online sports betting?

It depends on the state, not on the app. Of the 32 states where online sports betting is live in our October 13, 2026 check, 27 set 21 as the minimum age and 2 allow 18 or 19 (New Hampshire, Wyoming). The operator must verify age and identity before the first real-money wager, so a younger player is refused at sign-up, not at cash-out.

Why do some states limit betting to casinos?

Usually because tribal compacts or the state constitution only allow gaming on specific lands. Moving to statewide mobile betting often needs a new compact or a public vote.
