Over/under betting explained: betting the total score
An over/under bet ignores who wins. You bet on whether the two teams together score more or less than a number set by the sportsbook.

In short
Key takeaways
- You need the combined score above the line for an over, below it for an under.
- Whole-number totals can push; half-point totals cannot.
- Team totals and half or quarter totals work the same way on a smaller scale.
- Weather, pace and injuries move totals, especially in football and baseball.

At 45.5 instead of 45, the push disappears: 45 or fewer is an under win.
Totals markets
| Market | What counts | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Game total | Both teams, full game, including overtime | Over 47.5 |
| Team total | One team only | Team A over 24.5 |
| First half | Score at halftime | Under 23.5 |
| Quarter / period | One quarter or period | Q1 over 10.5 |
| Player total | A player stat, such as points or yards | Over 25.5 points |
Overtime counts toward full-game totals in most US sports, including the NFL, NBA and NHL. House rules list the exceptions.
Sequence
Bet a total
Step 01
Find the line
Look for O/U with a number, such as O 45.5 −110.
Step 02
Pick a side
Over if you expect a high-scoring game, under if low.
Step 03
Check what counts
Overtime, extra innings and settlement rules are in the house rules.
Step 04
Watch for moves
Lines move with weather and injuries. Your bet keeps your number.
What moves a total
Wind affects passing and kicking in football and fly balls in baseball. Strong wind often pushes totals down before kickoff or first pitch.
Pace matters in basketball: teams that shoot quickly create more possessions and more points. Injuries to key scorers or defenders move totals too.
Books also shade totals because many casual bettors prefer the over. The price on each side shows where the money is.

Totals terms
Know before you sit
- O/U
- Over/under, the same as a total.
- Push
- The final total equals the line; stakes are returned.
- Juice
- The price, usually −110 on each side.
- Alt total
- A different line at a different price.
- Live total
- A total updated during the game.
Break-even on totals
Totals are priced like spreads, usually −110 on each side. That means you need to win 52.38% of your bets to break even.
Half-point lines remove pushes, so every bet is either a win or a loss.
Like spreads, totals differ slightly between apps. A half point can turn a loss into a push or a push into a win, so compare lines before you bet.

01Totals
What does over 45.5 mean?
You win if the two teams score 46 or more points combined. At 45 or fewer, the bet loses. The half point means there can be no push.
Does overtime count in over/under bets?
In most US sports, yes: full-game totals include overtime and extra innings. Some markets, such as regulation-only soccer totals, exclude extra time. House rules say which.
What happens if the total lands exactly on the line?
On a whole-number line such as 45, a final total of 45 is a push and all stakes come back. Half-point lines avoid this.
How much does an over/under bet pay?
At the usual −110 price you win $100 for every $110 risked. Prices can move to −115 or −105 as money comes in.
What is a team total?
A total for one team only. Team A over 24.5 wins if that team scores 25 or more, whatever the other team scores.
Is the over or under better?
Neither on average. Some studies of past seasons found unders slightly more profitable in some sports, but books adjust. Bet only where you have a reason.
02Rules
What if a game is called early?
Most books void totals if the game does not reach a set point, such as 55 minutes in football or 5 innings in baseball, unless the result was already decided. Check the rules for each sport.
03More questions
How are baseball totals priced?
Baseball totals, often around 7.5 to 9.5 runs, may carry prices like over 8.5 at −120. The price moves instead of the line in many games. Starting pitchers must usually start as listed or the bet is voided.
What is a first-half total?
A total for the score at halftime only. It settles at halftime, and overtime has no effect. It is useful when you expect a fast or slow start.
Can I bet the over and the under together?
You can, but at −110 on both sides you lose about 4.5% of the total staked unless the game lands on a whole-number line. Some bettors do it at two different apps when lines differ, called a middle.
