Point spread explained: betting on the margin
A point spread evens out a mismatch. The favorite gives points and the underdog gets them, so both sides become close to a 50-50 bet.

Spread betting basics
In short
Key takeaways
- A minus spread means the team must win by more than that number. A plus spread means it can lose by less, or win.
- If the margin lands exactly on the spread, the bet is a push and you get your stake back.
- Half points such as 3.5 make a push impossible.
- In the NFL, 3 and 7 are the most common margins, so moving across them changes the bet a lot.

Spreads by sport
| Sport | Name | Typical size |
|---|---|---|
| NFL / college football | Point spread | 1 to 14+ points |
| NBA / college basketball | Point spread | 1 to 15+ points |
| MLB | Run line | Usually 1.5 runs |
| NHL | Puck line | Usually 1.5 goals |
| Soccer | Asian handicap | 0.25 to 2+ goals |
Baseball and hockey use fixed 1.5 lines and move the price instead.

Step 01
Find the minus team
That is the favorite. −6.5 means it must win by 7+.
Step 02
Find the plus team
That is the underdog. +6.5 means it can lose by 6 and still win the bet.
Step 03
Check the price
Usually −110 on both sides; sometimes −115 / −105.
Step 04

Spreads shift with injuries and money. Your bet keeps the line you took.
Why key numbers matter
About one in seven NFL games ends with a three-point margin, and seven is the next most common. That makes 3 and 7 the key numbers.
Getting +3.5 instead of +2.5 wins every game the underdog loses by exactly 3. That is why books charge more to move across those numbers.
In basketball, scores are higher and margins are spread out, so single points matter less.

How the −110 price works
Both sides of a spread are usually priced at −110. If you win exactly half your bets, you lose money: you risk $110 to win $100 each time.
To break even you need to win 52.38% of your spread bets. Most bettors fall short of that over a season.
Shopping between licensed apps helps: getting +3.5 at one app instead of +3 at another is worth more over a season than most tips.

01Spread basics
What does −7 mean in betting?
The team is a 7-point favorite. It must win by 8 or more for your bet to win. If it wins by exactly 7, the bet is a push and you get your stake back.
What does +3.5 mean in betting?
The team is a 3.5-point underdog. Your bet wins if it loses by 3 or fewer points, or wins the game. It loses if the team loses by 4 or more.
What happens if the spread is a push?
If the final margin equals the spread, the bet is graded a push and your stake is returned. In a parlay, the pushed leg is usually removed.
How much do I win on a spread bet at −110?
At −110 you win $100 for every $110 you risk, or $10 on an $11 bet. Your total return includes your stake.
Is the spread better than the moneyline?
Neither is better in general. The spread pays about even money on both sides; the moneyline pays more on underdogs and less on favorites. Choose the one that matches your view of the game.
Why do spreads move?
Books move lines when money comes in unevenly or news such as an injury changes the outlook. Bets already placed keep their original spread.
02Advanced
What is buying a half point?
Some sportsbooks let you move a spread by half a point for a worse price, for example from −3 at −110 to −2.5 at −130. It can be worth it around key numbers, rarely elsewhere.
03More questions
What is a reverse line move?
A spread that moves against the side most bettors are on, often because larger bets came in on the other side. It shows which way the sportsbook sees the risk.
How are college football spreads different?
They are larger, often 20 points or more, because the gap between teams is wider. Key numbers still matter, but less than in the NFL.
Do spreads include overtime?
Yes in most US sports. Full-game spreads count overtime, so a tied game in regulation can still cover or not after overtime. First-half and quarter spreads settle on their own periods only.
