In short

Key takeaways

  • Stick to pass or don’t pass and add odds. That keeps the combined edge well under 1%.
  • The odds bet pays true odds: 2:1 on 4 and 10, 3:2 on 5 and 9, 6:5 on 6 and 8.
  • Place 6 and 8 are fine; place 4 and 10 cost over four times as much.
  • Center-table proposition bets carry edges of 9% to 17%.

Build a low-edge craps bet

  1. Tip 01

    Bet the pass line

$10 on the pass line before the come-out roll.

  2. Tip 02

    Wait for a point

    If 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 rolls, that number becomes the point.

  3. Tip 03

    Add odds

Place odds behind your pass bet, up to the table’s limit, often 3×, 4×, 5×.

  4. Tip 04

    Optional: place 6 and 8

Bet in $6 units so the 7:6 payout is exact.

  5. Tip 05

    Stop there

Skip the center bets. They look exciting and cost the most.

Why odds make craps cheaper

The odds bet has no house edge, but you can only make it alongside a pass or come bet. The more odds you take, the lower the edge on your total money.

With 3-4-5× odds, a pass line bet plus full odds carries a combined edge of about 0.37%. That is among the lowest edges on any casino game.

The catch is variance: odds bets are larger than the line bet, so your swings grow. Set your base bet so full odds fit your bankroll.

Mistakes at the craps table

  1. 01Playing the center

Hard ways, horn and any seven look cheap but carry 9–17% edges.

  2. 02Skipping odds

A pass line without odds pays 1.41%; with odds the average drops sharply.

  3. 03Odd place amounts

Placing $5 on the 6 pays $5, not $5.83. Bet in $6 units.

  4. 04Big 6 and 8

Pays even money on the same numbers that place bets pay 7:6. Edge 9.09%.

Questions before and after you play

A 90-second guide cannot cover every table moment. Tap a group, then a question — answers are short paragraphs, not one-liners.

01Payouts

What does a hard 8 pay in craps?

A hard 8 (4 and 4) pays 9 to 1. It wins if 4-4 rolls before any 7 or an easy 8 such as 5-3 or 6-2. The house edge is 9.09%, so it costs over six times more than the pass line.

What is the best bet in craps?

The odds bet, which pays true odds and has no house edge. You make it after a point is set, behind a pass or come bet. Don’t pass with lay odds is just as good for players who bet against the shooter.

What does the field bet pay?

The field wins on 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. Most totals pay even money; 2 usually pays 2 to 1 and 12 pays 2 to 1 or 3 to 1. With 12 at 3 to 1 the edge is 2.78%; at 2 to 1 it is 5.56%.

How much does a place bet on 6 pay?

A place bet on 6 or 8 pays 7 to 6. A $6 bet wins $7, and a $12 bet wins $14. The edge is 1.52%, the best of all place bets.

Why does any seven pay only 4 to 1?

A seven rolls 6 times in 36, so true odds are 5 to 1. Paying 4 to 1 gives the house a 16.67% edge, the highest in craps.

What is the house edge on don’t pass?

About 1.36% per bet resolved. It is slightly better than pass because a 12 on the come-out is a push for don’t pass rather than a win.

02At the table

What is 3-4-5x odds?

A common limit on odds bets: up to 3 times your line bet on 4 and 10, 4 times on 5 and 9, and 5 times on 6 and 8. Each case wins the same amount, 6 times the line bet, when the point hits.

Can I take down a place bet?

Yes. Place bets are off-and-on bets you can remove or turn off at any time. Pass line bets cannot be taken down once a point is set.

03More questions

What does the yo pay in craps?

The yo, a one-roll bet on 11, usually pays 15 to 1. Some casinos write 15 for 1, which includes your stake and pays one unit less. At 15 to 1 the edge is 11.11%.

Is the hard way bet worth it?

Hard 6 and 8 pay 9 to 1 with a 9.09% edge; hard 4 and 10 pay 7 to 1 with an 11.11% edge. They are fun side action, but several times more costly than line bets with odds.
